Vertical Marathon events have become all the rage in China, with regular skyscraper-conquering races held in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. A fad for the young, the passionate and the fashionable, running up seemingly endless numbers of staircases is the newest ‘it thing’ in the world of endurance racing.
During the Vertical Marathon’s stop in Guangzhou last year, participants were treated to more than just grueling stair-running, with friendly boxing matches, trampoline fun, a riverside run and even the chance to face-off against the famous Blue Men in a variety of activities.
The racing circuit’s last stop was in Huizhou and now runners are looking forward to tackling skyscrapers in China’s four largest cities, where they will compete in six skill-based categories. Winners and top athletes will compete against their international counterparts in the finals.
The Guangzhou stop will see three races in the CBD. The first race on May 20 is now open for registration and limited to 520 participants. The venue, the East Tower of Tianying Square, stands 254.4 meters in height, with 1,527 stairs. The winner will walk away with RMB800.
