Nine people have been arrested in Guangdong province after a joint operation by customs officials in Zhuhai and Shantou, according to a report by The Drink Business.

According to the Customs Department, the bust netted a total of RMB200 million in undeclared booze, comprising over 200 tones of Cognacs and newly bottled spirits.

The main suspect in the case is a citizen of Macau identified in reports only by his surname, Yang. Using his position as a representative for a French spirits company, Yang allegedly created numerous companies in Shantou and Zhuhai to print fake documentation for the alcohol he was illegally importing.

When police raided Yang’s facilities they found a large amount of smuggled or improperly-declared spirits, barrels reportedly containing Cognac and manufacturing stations with bottling equipment.

The bust comes hot on the heels of an operation by Shenzhen Customs that netted close to USD12 million in smuggled wine. Some readers may also recall the operation conducted by Foshan police back in November that resulted in the arrest of 10 people and the seizure of more than 4,000 bottles of counterfeit spirits worth nearly RMB3 million.
