A man armed with a fruit knife has killed one man and injured another in Guangzhou’s Haizhu District, according to a report by Tencent News.
While the words ‘knife attack’ instantly bring to mind images of mass killings that have been perpetrated in the past at transport hubs in China, like the infamous Kunming train station attack in 2014, this incident appears to have been personal.
Reports indicate that the suspect, a 43-year-old Fujian man surnamed Lin, told shocked passersby "not to be afraid," and that the murdered man owed him money.
Police rushed to the scene to arrest the man, while medical staff confirmed the death of one victim, a 46-year-old man surnamed Chen. Another unnamed man sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to a preliminary police investigation, the incident happened yesterday, April 26, at sometime shortly after 2pm when Lin confronted Chen at a warehouse located on Nantai Lu, in Haizhu.
Chen was reportedly involved in a retail and wholesale cloth business and died “on the spot” after being stabbed by Lin.
Lin is being held in police custody and is presumably in some pretty deep trouble.
