Peru has had a rough start to 2017, with the country’s northern reaches being hit with a series of devastating floods that have killed 100 people and left tens of thousands displaced.
Roads have been covered in water, bridges swept away and precious farmlands have been turned into swamps. The situation truly is dire, with a state of emergency currently issued for over 800 towns and cities and access to food hindered by skyrocketing prices.
To make a sad situation even more grim, the United Nations Population Fund has reported that an estimated 5,500 women of reproductive age are in danger of sexual assault and that at least 550 pregnant women are in need of urgent support.

In response to this terrible situation, a group of Peruvian expats living in Guangzhou have organized the ‘Peru Needs You’ fundraising event to offer support to those affected by the tragedy unfolding in South America.
The fundraiser will be held this Saturday, April 8, from 3pm-midnight at Yuhe Restaurant and feature food, traditional dances and performances by three Peruvian DJs.
“We call the event Pollada, because in Peru, when people want to collect money for any purpose, they use the same name,” one of the event's organizers, José Alejandro Lopez Martinez, told That’s. “The name originates from the Spanish word pollo (chicken), so it means that we are going to cook grilled chicken in Peruvian style.”

Tickets will be available for RMB50 at the door, and include access to the event as well as a quarter of a grilled chicken and a side of potatoes.
According to Martinez, all funds raised at the event will be sent to the Peruvian embassy in Beijing.
