January 2: Vegetarian Music Mash-Up
What do vegetarian cuisine and music have in common? Well, they’re both enjoyed by people all over the world, no matter their nationality, gender, age or background. This December, venture into the second annual Vegetarian Music Mash-Up carnival that’s brimming with innovative and futuristic designs. Come drink, dance and drum and enjoy performances by visiting international DJs, musicians, dancers, rappers and more. Vegetarian food stands will offer a nutritious boost so you can stay locked in party mode all night long.

January 3: National Symphony Orchestra
One of the oldest and most versatile orchestras working in Great Britain today, the National Symphony Orchestra is recognized for its ability to communicate and connect with audiences via virtuosity, commitment and passion. Founded in 1940, it surged to success in the 1980s, recording a dynamic range of genres: classical, film and TV scores, as well as West End and Broadway musicals. On the stage of Guangdong Performing Arts Center Theater, the orchestra will present a repertoire centered on Strauss.

January 3: Idea Exchange
Coming into being in 2013, Idea Exchange features guest speakers that address a variety of topics, which are followed by lively Q&A sessions to get everyone involved in discussion and debate. By all account, it’s a great occasion to meet like-minded people. The event takes place every Tuesday at Constellation Café. This Tuesday, featuring Levent Akdeniz, a Turkish Greek architect, entrepreneur, economic major and keen China watcher who’s been in the Middle Kingdom for nine years, Idea Exchange will begin the New Year with big topics: What does the future have to hold for China and will the economy boom or bust? Come share a piece of your mind on Tuesday night.

January 4 & 8: Capoeira Brasil at Guangzhou
An organization with representatives all over the world, Capoeira Brasil practices, teaches and demonstrates the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira. Under the auspices of the Hong Kong branch, Mekael Turner runs classes every Wednesday and Sunday at Guangzhou’s new TMT Gym beside the river in Liede. Turner, who also goes by his capoeira nickname ‘Jamaica,’ describes the sport as “like a conversation,” not just between the two bodies facing off against one another, but in the interaction of the different elements that make up the martial art, including playing an instrument called the berimbau and chanting in Portuguese.

January 5: Italian Philharmonic Orchestra
Italy’s national treasure, the distinguished Italian Philharmonic Orchestra is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in the Mediterranean. A succession of critical acclaims has been bestowed upon the orchestra and its eminent music director Maestro Giuseppe Di Donato. In January, the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra is set to visit China again, making an appearance at Xinghai Concert Hall with classic pieces like ‘Brindisi’ and ‘Con te partirò’ (Time to Say Goodbye).

January 6 – 7: Flamencura by Paco Pena Flamenco Dance Company
A true master of his craft, Spanish composer and guitarist Paco Pena is widely considered to be the creme de la creme of flamenco dance. The brainchild of Pena, Paca Pena Flamenco Dance Company has taken flamenco to the realm of musical theater and brought Pena’s opuses to audiences the world over. Come to the Guangzhou Opera House and see Paco Pena Flamenco Dance Company perform the acclaimed number ‘Flamencura.’

January 7: Guangzhou Hash House Harriers
The Guangzhou Hash House Harriers – or ‘drinking club with a running problem’ – is all about meeting people, drinking loads of beer and staying fit. The team meets every Saturday at Mango Bar on Huanshi Dong Lu. You don’t have to be an excellent runner but do need to like adventure, the countryside and have a reasonable sense of humor. Oh, and there may be some initiations involved…

January 8: Richard Clayderman
Born Philippe Pagès, Clayderman encountered the piano early on in life under the guidance of his musical father. By the age of six, Clayderman could read music more adeptly than his native French. At the age of 12, he was accepted into the Conservatoire de Paris. His talent did not go unnoticed, as he was soon invited to accompany such major French stars as Michel Sardou, Thierry Le Luron and Johnny Hallyday. Clayderman's distinctive style has earned him superstar status all over the world. He has recorded over 1,300 melodies and clocked up a massive worldwide sales record of approximately 150 million as of 2006. Come out to hear this distinguished prince of piano while he’s in town.
