2017 cruised into town last night, a pleasant reprieve for those of us weary with a 2016 that brought seemingly endless pop-culture deaths, a President-elect Trump, a refugee crisis and a spat of terror attacks in Europe. Oh, and a notable spike in Guangzhou F&B closures.
Last night though, 2016 had one more unpleasant surprise for revelers in Zhujiang New Town – crowds, humungous, gigantic, overwhelming crowds. And naturally, a shortage of taxis.
As we previously reported, authorities implemented vehicle control measures on numerous Tianhe District traffic arteries and the Guangzhou Metro had trains running nonstop through a number of heavy-use stations – including Zhujiang New Town and Canton Tower.
While the backed-up traffic, irregular metro and massive crowds may not have been a major issue for those living in the CBD, it posed problems for people trying to leave the downtown area after the New Year’s countdown.
Some individuals, like the Weibo user profiled in the image below, lamented having to wait until 5am to catch a metro train out of the Huacheng Plaza/Mall of the World area.
Below is a brief photo recap of the madness:
