Weekly Live Music Review is a regular online feature where Guangzhou-based musician Kirby Carney reviews a live performance in the PRD.
Last Sunday, I went to see Memory Car at The Brew in Taojin. I was more than happy to review after catching their show at Hooley's Battle of the Bands, where they came in third and won best original song for 'Fool.'
The boys are funky – their set is complete with balls-to-the-wall funk rock. They have a sizzling touch to them, slowing down and speeding up on a musical journey of punkish tunes mixed to a disco-based backdrop. To say my feet aren't moving is a lie and an understatement.
The controlled chaos, like Jimi Hendrix and early Red Hot Chili Peppers, that is Memo's guitar playing blends choppy rhythmic licks between scorching solos that have the crowd applauding after every song as if it was their last. These boys are ready and willing to prove a point.
After playing together for years and growing up with music, the group has built up a natural chemistry – melodic and touching, head-banging and tight. Their crafty use of carefully timed breaks is a testament to the timing and natural feel this band has when playing with each other.
Highlights from these boys included their own original 'Fool,' which is a saucy funk-rock, bouncing-high-hat-based dance track with clean melodic vocals for a gripping hook of a chorus.
'Moves like Jagger' is pop funk at its best: catchy, sexy and straight badass. 'I'm Yours' is a cool down but by no means boring, as a melodic solo brings warmth to the soul. And 'Sugar' goes from passionate and soothing to a dance anthem as the boys twist and turn modern classics into funk masterpieces. Do yourself a favor and check these boys out.
Catch Memory Car live every Sunday night at 10pm at The Brew Taojin.
