On the morning of December 2, residents of Zede Huayuan complex in Baiyun District, Guangzhou could hear people arguing from an eighth-floor flat. Moments later, they heard a loud thump.
A building staffer who was cleaning the courtyard at time claims he saw a man leap from the eighth floor at 7.25am holding more than RMB100,000 in cash.
Morning joggers returning from their run reported seeing thousands of RMB100 bills scattered over staircases and hallways outside the apartment complex, according to the South China Morning Post.
By the time reporters arrived, the man’s body had been covered with newspapers and security guards were seen cleaning up the money. None of the residents pocketed the cash, telling Guangzhou Television reporters they believed it contained "evil spirits."
At around 11am, family members of the deceased arrived on scene and stayed with the body. Later that day, a woman's body was found in an apartment on the eighth floor of the same complex.
Investigators later identified the deceased man as 67-year-old Liang Mou, while the woman was discovered to be his 61-year-old wife.
It is still unclear why the man leapt from the building holding thousands of renminbi in cash and how his wife died, but the incident is currently under investigation.
