November 8: Flyying Colours

WIn-WIN-flyying-colours-1-1.jpgBased in Melbourne, Flyying Colours is famous for their psychedelic, shoegaze music, and is highly sought after by international labels. Their first EP is often played on well-known stations like BBC, Amazing Radio and XFM. The lead singer’s moderately paced vocals and the harshness of the bass are reminiscent of better known My Bloody Valentine. Tickets to their first concerts in Australia and the UK completely sold out, which is unusual for a new band, so order yours soon!

November 10: Northern European Night

Northern-European-Night-1-1.jpgThis concert is a shout-out to talented musicians hailing from Northern Europe and features popular singers from Scandinavia. The Fjords, a four-member band, will play indie-tronic music, which combines indie, electro, electronica, rock and pop. Hip-hop singer-songwriter and rapper Neneh Cherry, the stepdaughter of American jazz musician Don Cherry, boasts an original style, though she has also been influenced by the punk rock scene in the UK.

November 10-12: Hooley’s 8th Annual Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands is back this week for its eighth consecutive year! From Thursday-Saturday you can catch the best of the PRD’s amateur music scene live on the second floor of Hooley’s! This week’s performers will be scored by a panel of three judges and the winners will play on Saturday, November 19, in the highly anticipated BOTB Finals. Stay tuned to That’s PRD this week for more information!

November 11-13: Encounter by Comedy Theater of Budapest 

encounter.jpgVigszinhaz, or the Comedy Theater of Budapest, has enjoyed a history of being the pioneering institution of Hungary’s drama scene for a century. While trying to strike a balance between traditional values and modern creativity, the theater has delighted audiences with their classical and contemporary, foreign and Hungarian dramas of various genres. Encounter, a production based on writer Péter Nádas' A Book of Memories, tackles love, affection, power and human relations in a somewhat philosophical framework. Encounter will be performed in Hungarian with Chinese subtitles.

November 12: Jochen Miller at W Guangzhou

jochen-miller-2.jpgHailing from Holland, Jochen Miller has regularly performed prime stages at major festivals and events, including EDC Las Vegas, Ultra Miami, Tomorrowland and Kings Day. Aside from killing the festival circuit and performing alongside the likes of Armin van Buuren, Jochen has also placed first in the Dutch Mixing Contest at Dance Valley.

November 12: Ryu Goto

ryu-goto.jpgHailing from New York City, Japanese-American violinist Ryu Goto was discovered as a prodigy at an early age, when he performed on stage at the Pacific Music Festival as a 7-year-old. A classical musician, Goto has been a featured performer with many well-known orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and so on. At Xinghai Concert Hall, Ryu Goto will perform the classic Chinese tune ‘The Butterfly Lovers’ as well as famous pieces by Robert Schumann and Maurice Ravel.

November 12-13: Village

village-by-gesher-theatre.jpgThe Israel Theatre Prize winner Village paints a vivid picture of life in a small Israeli village. The complex relationships and struggles of identity are depicted through the experience of Yossi, a young boy and the protagonist in the story. Founded in 1991 by Yevgeny Arye, a successful stage and screen director from Moscow, Gesher Theatre stands as one of the few bilingual theaters in the world. Today, its productions are staged mostly in Hebrew.

November 13: Migrant Quartet

Migrant-Quartet.jpgThe search for freedom is at the very core of French jazz band Migrant Quintet, which is led by Florent Brique. Oscillating between written music and improvised parts, Roberto Negro, Julien Pontvianne, Florent Nisse and Florian Satche create a rich musical journey full of heartfelt sound and emotion. Look for them at the Canton Place this November.

November 13: Dub Invaders

Dub-Invaders.jpgFormed in 1997 in Lyon, France, High Tone, a dub band and trendsetter in bringing dub music to a live audience, has been touring extensively from Canada to China, Poland to England, and playing at small venues or famous music festivals. Actively collaborating with other artists, the five-member band is considered a major player on the French dub scene. This November, High Tone is touring China with their music project Dub Invaders, arriving at Guangzhou’s Y:union on November 13 to present some of their magnificent impros on stage. Come see them.
