Yesterday afternoon, a 16-year-old girl in Yuexiu District took test prep stress to a dangerous level, throwing hundreds of items out of her 16th floor bedroom.

The incident began sometime between noon and 12.30pm, when the emotionally unstable youth began throwing books, toys, bags, wooden shelves and even an iPad out of her bedroom window, according to local media.

Police arrived on the scene between 1-1.30pm (reports vary), cordoning off the street below to avoid injury to pedestrians and inflating a giant pillow-like balloon in case the girl decided to jump.

The incident, which lasted two hours, concluded when police entered the student’s bedroom at around 2.20pm, at which time the street was reopened to foot traffic.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the exam-induced meltdown, although the debacle left Jianshe Si Malu covered in debris. According to Tencent News, the girl’s parents took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The incident highlights the immense pressure many Chinese children face when it comes to exam time, pressure that sometime ends in student suicide. According to a China Daily article citing the 2014 Annual Report on China's Education, most Chinese teens who take their own lives are in middle school and do so as a result of “the heavy pressure of the test-oriented education system.”
