Despite the massive amount of money that was poured into Chinese Super League teams this year, Guangzhou Evergrade managed to secure a record sixth straight league title on Sunday after a 1-1 draw against the Yanbian Funde.
Paulinho, a former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, scored just before halftime to give Guangzhou the lead. The score was levelled with just two minutes remaining when South Korean Yoon Bit-Garam put one through the posts.
The title is Evergrande coach Luiz Felipe Scolari’s second since arriving in 2015.
“Guangzhou are a worthy champion for sure,” Shanghai SIPG assistant coach Mads Davidsen told The Associate Press. "This is the sixth title in a row, so no doubt they are still the strongest team in China.”
Despite two games remaining in the Evergrade’s season, yesterday’s draw means they cannot be caught up with.
The accomplishment follows the recent announcement that former Evergrande coach Marcello Lippi will be the new coach of the Chinese national team - following the resignation of Gao Hongbo.
