Forty-six students are lucky to be alive after their school bus burst into flames on the Nansha Port Expressway, near the Luntou Toll booth, on September 27.
Tragedy was averted by three fast-acting border-inspection officers who were passing the stopped vehicle when they noticed the driver using a fire extinguisher in an attempt to dowse flames that had engulfed the front tires. Despite the tire fire, all of the students were still seated on the bus.
The officers, named Luo Junlin, Yin Zihui and Ning Huajian, immediately began evacuating the students from the bus – safely removing all 46 children, according to Tencent News.
One of the rescuers, Luo, speculated that the children did not realize the danger they were in because the flames had not yet burnt into the interior of the bus – something that happened after removing the last of the youths.
“Just when they got out of the bus, it burned up"," Luo told reporters. By the time firefighters arrived on the scene the tire fire had spread, engulfing the entire vehicle.
The bus, which was reduced to a twisted metal frame, was from Haizhu District’s Kangle Primary School. Authorities in Haizhu District have stated that they give every school bus a thorough inspection in the wake of this narrowly averted tragedy.
