Chengguan officials are not known for their popularity among locals (or foreigners for that matter). Commonly associated with harassing roadside DVD salesmen and barbeque stalls, the chengguan are essentially the metropolitan Chinese equivalent of high school hall monitors – meaning they are about as admired as neon parachute pants.
One beggar in Yuexiu District took his distaste for the chengguan a little further than most yesterday, when he stabbed an officer with a pair of scissors outside Exit B of the Taojin metro station, near the Baiyun Hotel.
According to witnesses, the incident occurred around 2.30pm when a beggar with “many body burn scars” got into a scuffle with an officer. The confrontation reached its bloody climax when the panhandler drew the scissors and stabbed the official in the arm.
Additional chengguan officials quickly arrived on the scene to subdue the perpetrator and passersby gave paper towels to the injured officer to help stem his loss of blood.
“With batons in hand, those chengguans went unbridled” commented 美好时光. "Is he stepping on the beggar’s hand? Is this called law enforcement? I’m speechless about Chinese chengguan!"
Another online commenter stated: “I am relieved to see the chengguan bleeding.”
The comments clearly highlight the intense animosity some feel towards urban management officers.
When all was said and done, one officer had lost a considerable amount of blood, one beggar was taken under Yuexiu police investigation and a whole slew of commuters collected some ghastly cellphone photos.
