Another week, another insightful DJ interview – this time with California legend Tall Sasha. Having performed alongside the likes of Avicii, Kaskade and Tiesto (among others), this in-demand DJ will be hitting the decks this Saturday at Fei, in the W Hotel Guangzhou.
To prepare you for what is sure to be an outstanding show, we chatted with Tall Sasha about Asia, superheroes and the origin of his stage name!
For starters, tell our readers how you ended up with Tall Sasha as a stage name?
My real name is Sasha and I am very tall (195 cm). Since there is already a famous DJ Sasha from the UK, my friends started to differentiate and just call me Tall Sasha. It's easy to spot and remember this name.
If I am not mistaken, you are originally from California, but you're now spending a lot of time in Asia, correct?
I was born in Europe, moved to California at the age of 16 and started traveling across Asia to China, Thailand and Hong Kong since 2015.
What made you start spending more time in Asia?
I admire different cultures and I always loved coming to this part of the world for shows and holidays. When I returned back to the USA, I would feel something drawing me back to Asia.
Have you performed in Guangzhou before? If not, what do you expect?
I have not played in Guangzhou but have played a few times in China, in Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xi'an. Based on my experience I am certain there will be lots of energy and dancing going around. I believe Chinese people are very in tune with the music scene and can really tell what is a good vibe and talent.
If you had to choose between living out the rest of your life in Antarctica with the penguins, or getting crotch punched by Brock Lesnar once, which would you choose?
Being that I’m a world traveller and have lived in many exotic places, the idea of living with penguins in a very cold place is not a bad idea. Perhaps I could make them dance?
Favorite style of Chinese food?
I like spicy food and I really love Sichuan style, which of course is famous for its particularly numbing and spicy taste.
You’ve been given an elephant. You can give it away, sell it or keep it. What would you do with the elephant?
I'll make him dance to my music and get 100 million YouTube hits.
Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?
I think Batman, somehow he looks more muscular.
Back to music for one last question, Storm Music Festival is rolling into the Pearl River Delta (both Shenzhen and Guangzhou) in the coming months, are you familiar with this electronic festival and is it something you would like to participate in in the future?
I have heard of it before, particularly Shanghai Storm. It would be a great privilege to play such an enormous event, but I am perfectly happy to perform in much smaller and intimate venues, such as W Hotel Guangzhou.
Anything else?
A very special thanks to Xin Wang Group and Music Fest Asia for bringing me to China!
