A courier who helped bust a foreign meth smuggling operation was awarded RMB190,000 last Tuesday by the Guangzhou police authority.
The payment came in the form of a large game show-sized check and our drug-fighting courier wore a pretty badass robot mask to collect it (presumably to hide his identity, but possibly because he really loves Transformers).
According to South China Morning Post, the courier tipped off police in September after 11 boxes of high-heeled shoes were discovered to be much heavier than anticipated. When authorities randomly inspected one of the packages, they found small plastic bags of methamphetamine, often referred to as crystal, stuffed into the heel of one shoe.
Apparently not your standard wedge shoes...
Upon further inspection, 108 kilograms of crystal in 541 bags were seized by police. Five traffickers, all hailing from African nations, were arrested.
The drugs were bound for Southeast Asia and were being staged for export in Guangzhou and Dongguan.
This is the third time a whistle-blower has been publically rewarded since Guangdong police began encouraging tip-offs from the public several months ago.
While the fate of the five suspects is currently unknown, they will likely face the full brunt of Chinese law – which in their case may involve the death penalty.
