China’s Urban Competition Report 2016 recently crowned Zhuhai (most famous for its close proximity to Macau) China’s ‘most livable’ city… for the third year in a row.

The report is the brainchild of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and surveys almost 300 cities in Chinese mainland, as well as Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, for their economic prowess, business environment and livability, among other qualities.

As stated above, this is the third time Zhuhai has received the coveted honor of most livable city, after it unseated Hong Kong in 2013. Second place went to Xiamen, with Zhoushan, Hong Kong, Haikou, Shenzhen, Sanya, Wenzhou, Suzhou and Wuxi rounding out the top 10 list in that order.

While Zhuhai may be China’s most livable city according to China’s Urban Competition Report, it should be noted that other evaluations do exist, including one by the Asian Development Bank that found Chengdu the most livable in 2014.

When it comes to economically competitive cities, the Pearl River Delta dominates the top five, with Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Hong Kong all making an appearance. Shenzhen snagged the desirable first place position, while Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Taipei round out the top five in that order.

Released on May 30, the document is the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ 14th annual report. Research for the project took almost a year and a half to complete and reports each city’s overall performance throughout 2015, according to our friends at News GD.
