Video Bloggers Dine on Guangzhou Metro, Outrage Ensues

Rush hour on the Guangzhou metro is packed, pushy and smelly at the best of times, which is likely why netizens have unleashed a torrent of scorn on three video bloggers who filmed themselves enjoying a sit-down dinner on a Line 4 train last week.

Images of the improvised picnic surfaced last Friday and show the trio sitting around a folding table adorned with bowls, cutlery and a giant jug of water. The men also appear to have hung their clothes on the handrail above them (probably because they were soaked from Friday’s sporadic, yet heavy, rains).

Eating and drinking are not permitted on Guangzhou’s metro system – although this is a rule the men were allegedly unaware of. They were eventually kicked off the train by metro employees at the Higher Education Mega Center South Station, according to The Nanfang.

Expectedly, images of the dining-stunt quickly went viral on Weibo – with some identifying the men as webcast anchors who create unusual live videos to increase their followers, according to CCTV. Also expected, condemnation ensued.

“I will give full support to punishing those webcasters who are seeking fame with outrageous moves,” said one Weibo user, while another commented, “Congratulations, you’ve made yourselves the most despicable men in China.”

While live streaming day-to-day life online is nothing new, the promise of cash and sponsorships have driven some webcasters to move on to brasher and riskier stunts to increase their followers and appeal to potential advertisers.

Though this exploit was not particularly risky nor dangerous, it certainly must have been annoying to evening commuters on their way home for the weekend.
