The Diary of a Male K2Fiter is a temporary series that offers a first hand look at the trials and tribulations of the 10-week K2Fit Challenge. Join Andy Board, a Zhuhai resident, on his quest for a fitter and healthier lifestyle.

Week Five

Week five started the same way that week four finished, with very healthy breakfasts and lunches predominantly composed of salad and a bit of mid-afternoon fruit. The evening meal was always going to be the one that would let me down, as these were predominantly business dinners. However, I tried to keep them as healthy as possible and drink water instead of wine.

Did I have the occasional Jack Daniels and Coke? Of course I did, but I can honestly say that I only had four over two weeks  – and it was with Coke Zero. Those that know me well enough will know that four glasses would normally last me just three hours, so two weeks was quite an accomplishment.

Week five’s training went fantastic and it was the most dedicated I have ever been. I maintained twice daily sessions and can truthfully say that I have never felt so good (well at least during the past 10 years of my expat life).

The back end of the week got complicated, as I knew there would be no time for hotel laundry and I really did not want four sets of sweaty training clothes and shoes inside my suitcase. It truly was a dilemma, what was I going to do? The easy answer would have been to give up and not train, but that was not an option. So instead, I took a shower in my Thursday training kit and hung all the clothing on the radiator so that it was ready to be packed for my departure on Friday. Unfortunately, there was no time for training on Friday.

I flew back to Hong Kong on Friday, April 22 (my birthday), and returned to Zhuhai on Saturday. I knew there would be birthday drinks on Saturday night but I did not anticipate staying out until 5am (jetlag…). Regardless of the late night, I made it to boot camp at 10.30am and sweat the alcohol out of my system – catching up on sleep all afternoon.

All in all, a relatively positive week five and now onto week six – which includes a five day vacation to Taiwan – where the majority of the Zhuhai social club will be to attend a wedding.

Week Six

Week six was doomed to be yet another disastrous week – due largely in part to the wedding my Zhuhai social circle and myself would be attending in Taiwan.

I packed my gym wear, but in the back of my mind I had already accepted defeat; I guess I have not 100 percent converted to the healthy side yet.

As expected, there was a large amount of alcohol consumed over the four days but I did try to eat healthy whenever possible. I stayed away from fried foods and digested as much salad as I could stand to eat (which in fairness is not a lot)

I did get some exercise in, most notably an hour game of beach soccer – which was definitely hard on the legs (so hard, I seriously felt like I had done a complete legs workout). This was followed by an hour of volleyball, which took care of my shoulders and core.

The exercise was a good physical workout, as it was in the sun and very hot – so I worked up a good sweat (as you can probably tell, I am trying pretty hard to convince myself that the week was not a complete blowout). There was also a lot of walking, so I don’t feel like I 100 percent failed – more like 80 percent failed.

We got back to Zhuhai on Friday night, so Saturday morning I was straight back with the Zhuhai Walking Deadlifters and hit boot camp harder than ever before. Why? Because yet again I knew I needed to right the wrong of my previous four days. After boot camp, I restocked the fridge with approved K2Fit ingredients and prepped the food for week seven.

Sunday, I was back at boot camp and again smashing the exercises until I could do no more.

With regards to the challenge, we now only have four weeks left – so I’m totally focused and prepared to hit these four weeks hard. After that, I’m looking forward to soldier on and build on what the challenge has started.

Week seven here I come!
