Xingsheng Lu is a literal medley of world cuisines – from Japanese to Turkish, Italian to American and (almost) everything in between. One thing the renowned party street has lacked over the past few years though, is an Indian eatery.
Liede’s curry fanatics (looking at you Chino) have long had to venture to Zhujiang or the Taojin area to quench their masala cravings – but, with the opening of Paradise India last month, this is no longer the case.
Paradise India is an inconspicuous restaurant tucked behind Hayat Supermarket and next to Sufan Parlour on Xingsheng Lu. It boasts no indoor seating and no fancy decorations – instead choosing to make its name on good food and fair, honest prices.
Paradise India proprietor Mahesh Jagtiani is no stranger to Guangzhou curry lovers. Having opened Namaste India 12 years ago in Panyu, Jagtiani is more than proud of the food he serves, boasting on our last visit of his Diwali catering conquests at a number of Guangzhou’s top hotels – including the Shangri-La and Sheraton.
By our appraisal, Mr. Jagtiani has every right to be proud – his curries are rich and dynamic and his service is prompt and friendly. His kitchen is also the textbook definition of clean – which is rare for a Guangzhou curry joint.
While we certainly haven’t tried every dish on Paradise India’s menu, we’ve made a pretty good dent in it. Top curry choices include the mutton roganjosh (RMB65), paneer butter masal (RMB50), chicken masala (RMB55) and our personal favorite, the saag paneer (RMB50). Your best bread option, by our assessment, is the cheese paratha (RMB25), although we also enjoyed the onion kulcha (RMB15).
Be forewarned, curries served with mild spice are enough to make you sweat - so avoid the super spicy unless you’re Indian or keen on a heart attack.
Open from 11am-11.30pm, Paradise India offers guests a small but comfortable outdoor seating experience or delivery across Guangzhou.
