Good news for football fans: Manchester United have announced that they are coming to China for the International Champions Cup (ICC).
The club will play two matches on their visit. The first will be against German side Borussia Dortmund at the Shanghai Stadium on July 22, and the second, as we announced earlier in the week, will be against arch rivals Manchester City in Beijing. We can now confirm that will be at the Bird's Nest on July 25.
Both Manchester United and Manchester City have failed to impress in this year in the English Premier League, so perhaps the ICC will provide an opportunity for them to actually win some silverware. Some real serious, meaningful silverware.
Anyway, it’s a good chance to watch some top European sides battling it out.
Although United have spent the past two years touring the US, they have a wealth of support in Asia. In fact, China has even more Manchester United fans than those prawn sandwich lovers in the south of England, with 107 million the number touted.
Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward spoke of the team’s “strong historical links” with China (we hear Fred the Red and Fergie were on the Long March), and praised the support that they had received from Chinese fans.
