Something happened today in Guangzhou that hasn’t happened in a really, really long time – it snowed. Exactly how long it has been since the city’s last encounter with flurries is unclear, but numerous sources claim it has been at least a hundred years.
Admittedly, we didn't take last week’s reports of potential snowfall too seriously (as the last snowfall in nearby Hong Kong was in 1975), but we were pleasantly surprised none the less.
While the cold white stuff didn’t stick – or fall for very long for that matter – it didn’t take long for photos to make the rounds on WeChat and other social media. Here is a selection of a few of our favorites:
Foshan also got a little blast of winter today:
Today will likely be remembered as the day it snowed in Guangzhou. While some may be quick to assert it was just sleet, there is little doubt some districts did experience snow, particularly at higher levels (like the tops of skyscrapers and Baiyun Mountain) – regardless, it was one for the books.
That’s PRD would like to note we cannot independently verify the authenticity of the images in this post.
