Since the carnage of September 11, 2001, the Western world has grown sadly accustom to acts of mass violence in the name of a perverted interpretation of Islam.
In Guangzhou, we have seen the violence first hand in the past year – in the form of vicious knife attacks.
On November 13, Paris underwent yet another horrifying attack – the second successful attack in less than a year.
With so much hate on both sides of the issue, it seems prudent to step back, remove the hateful rhetoric and remember the souls lost in the twisted and complicated ideological war being waged (both this week in Paris and around the world). Enter Varenna French Restaurant and Craft Brewery.
A relatively new location in Guangzhou, this haven for craft beer and fine eats wants to spend this evening (November 15) remembering the people the world lost this week in Paris and celebrating the notion that peace can exist between people of all colors and creeds.
The event, originally intended to be a celebration of General Manager Fathi Anouar Ghammam’s new book, Couleurs de me vie, will start with a poem about the oft-distant notion of peace and act as a impromptu eulogy to the victims of the mess that unfolded this week in Paris.
The event is non-political and non-religious, Varenna simply wants to welcome affected Guangzhouer’s to come and remember the fragility of life and celebrate the diverse group of people (and the peace we all share) that make up this city.
The event will run from 4pm until around 11pm and will include poems, positive vibes and video and written messages that will be delivered to the French Consulate this week.
Let today’s event at Varenna be a light to you, when all other lights have grown dim.
Author’s note: I don’t usually write this sappy, but, frankly, it has been an emotional few days.
