UPDATE: Jewel of India has ceased cooperation with App Cafe and is no longer in business at this location.
Indian food is the major leagues of culinary creation. Recipes of South Asia are renowned for their bold flavor, rich sauces and mouth-numbing spice – the perfect combination for grand palatability.
Zhujiang’s Jewel of India, opened in collaboration with App Café, is putting on a solid performance in Guangzhou’s competitive Indian dining district. The fare is surprisingly authentic, with rich curries, flavorful chutneys, vegetable-packed samosas and garlic naan rounding out the tastiest options on the menu. Expect to leave here feeling giddily full and sufficiently bloated (the food is that good).
What makes this location an easy sell, however, is the fact that you can enjoy Chinese and Thai dishes in addition to tasty Indian. With three culinary styles under one roof, Jewel of India is well positioned to strike a chord with nearly any patron who visits.
The butter chicken (RMB65) is authentic and full of flavor, but also just plain rich. For a spicier main, the mutton rogan josh (RMB70) – a classic Kashmiri staple – is bold and works well on a bed of basmati rice. Or, try scooping it up with some naan bread. Scooping food in other food is awesome, and it’s a celebrated part of Indian cuisine.
For the drinkers among us, Jewel of India offers a surprising and extensive beverage list, including Old Monk Rum (RMB25/single, RMB40/double, RMB250/bottle) – the palatable and genuinely old Indian rum. If you’re a fan of single malt, grab yourself a shot of Macallan 12 Years (RMB35) or Glenfiddich (RMB35).
Jewel of India and App Cafe’s discount deal, for those interested, is a set lunch menu. You can enjoy an Indian lunch set for RMB39, a Chinese set for RMB22 or a Thai set for RMB38.
“We are the only restaurant in China that does not change our recipes to suit the local palate,” says Ashok Amarnani, a chef partner in the Jewel of India-App Café collaboration. “We prefer authentic taste.”
Of course, it’s impossible to tell for sure what true authenticity tastes like, especially given the cuisine’s natural variety and regional diversity.
Open 7.30am-10.30pm daily (that’s right, 7.30am – this location also serves breakfast), Jewel of India is definitely worth a visit for anyone passionate about curry, spice and everything rice.
