When I'm out on the streets of Guangzhou at night before or after work, and there is time to spare to shoot, I'm always on the lookout for a place with good light, waiting like a predator stalking my prey: cyclists.
Panning is a technique in photography that involves following a fast-moving subject accurately while using a relatively slow shutter speed, resulting in a sharp subject while keeping the background blurry, with streaks that convey movement and speed. It's a technique that many find too difficult to do but is one that I was able to be proficient at quickly.
It requires steady hands, good body movement and lots of patience. Bicycle riders are my favorite to shoot since everyone has their own character and story. Some are in a rush to go home after a day's work, looking spent and tired.
Some are just about to go to work, running late. And some are just leisurely riding about, looking relaxed.
