A Ghanaian man has been sentenced to three years in jail in Guangzhou for selling counterfeit visas to students wanting to study in China.
The High People’s Court of Guangdong Province handed down the ruling on August 25.
The case and court proceedings lasted a year and although the accused states he did receive a fair trail, he claims he could not consult legal counsel services to help lessen the sentence.
He has ten days to appeal.
The unnamed man is allegedly married to a Chinese woman and has a two-year-old son.
According to the Ghana Community China webpage, the Ghanaian population in China has been growing due to economic hardship in Ghana. Crooked visa agents who promise non-existent jobs lure many of these people here, states the groups website.
A document released by the Ghana Community China group states that working in China without a valid visa is a serious offence that can hammer you with a fine of USD1600, as well as a sentence of 10 to 30 days in imprisonment.
