Chinese man detained in Los Angeles

A Chinese man is under investigation for assaulting a male flight attendant on a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou to Los Angeles earlier this month, according to the Guangzhou Daily.

The passenger, who remains unnamed, allegedly hit and screamed at the cabin crew member after declaring his seat had been taken.

According to numerous reports, the man then continued to hassle the flight attendant for the rest of the flight and was quoted as stating: “Los Angeles has a lot of cars. You’d better watch out for an accident.”

Authorities in Los Angeles were notified of the situation by the plane’s captain, who also ordered the crew to monitor the disorderly passenger for the remainder of the flight.

Upon landing in Los Angeles, police promptly detained the man and the case has since been transferred to the FBI for additional investigation. Police also interviewed crew members about the incident.

This report comes on the heels of an incident this week in Shenzhen, where a number of passengers decided to snag themselves business class seats (instead of their assigned economy seating) after the plane was delayed due to poor weather conditions. In this particular case, police arrested the defiant passengers after the plane landed in Shanghai.

Chinese authorities are sure to take note of these incidents, as they are currently creating a database to keep track of poorly behaved Chinese travelers.

The database is a consequence of the ever-growing list of incidents involving unacceptable behavior by Chinese tourists traveling abroad. Over the past six months Chinese tourists have been called-out for everything from feasting on endangered animals to washing their feet in public sinks

Chinese officials fear, understandably, that these ‘bad tourist’ issues reflect poorly on the country.
