Fete de la Musique has been around since 1982, when France’s then minister of culture, Jack Lang, dreamed up a festival built on freedom of expression and free access to music. More than three decades on, the concept has spread across the world, showcasing all kinds of genres, from pop and rock to jazz and classical.

As part of this year’s Festival Croisements, Fete de la Musique will be returning for the third time to South China. Taking place in the lush surrounds of Shunfeng Mountain Park, the lineup includes both domestic and foreign acts.

Leading the international bands into the musical fray is Theodore, Paul and Gabriel (video below), a female trio who have become fashionable – in typical French style – by being anti-fashion. Taking on androgynous attire or clothes that deliberately eschew overt sexuality, the threesome sing pop-rock tunes. Joining them from France is new outfit Bukatribe, four guys who use a cappella techniques to sing reggae, rap and even soul.

Ethnic folk artist Zhu Jing is arguably the most intriguing local act on show. A member of the Dai minority in Yunnan, she started her career aged 15 and has been going strong ever since. On the other end of the spectrum is Golden Cage, who perform with energy and irreverence in the classic indie-rock mold.

Running over the course of two days, Fete de la Musique is no longer just about music. There will also be an art installation, film screenings and workshops on traditional handicrafts, such as silkscreen printing and Cantonese opera mask painting.
