DuOud are Tunisian-born Jean-Pierre Smadija and and Algerian-born master oud player Mehdi Haddab. Blending their North African heritage with the latest Western technology, the duo builds a musical cycle that looks to their African roots while absorbing and morphing contemporary music styles such as break beats, jazz grooves and metal guitar music. 
At the centre of it all is the oud and the prospects that it holds, which is the incentive for Smadj and Mehdi to study what could be devised for the instrument and how they would push it into new realms such as jazz and rock. In the meantime, they are drawing from their experiences (in the way of the oud) to mark the subsequent course for their working project. DuOud are carrying this ancient instrument to kick off a tour with modern electronic rhythms, staging a performance in Guangzhou this month.
