Guangdong Folk Arts Museum Description

The Guangdong Folk Crafts Museum, located at the Chen Family Temple, was established in 1959 as a national first-class museum. The Chen Family Ancestral Hall (inscribed with Chen's Academy) was completed in the 19th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1893). It was a joint venture ancestral hall built by Chen's clans from various parts of Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty in Guangzhou. In 1988, it was announced by the State Council as a national key cultural relic protection unit. The Chen Family Ancestral Hall integrates various architectural decoration techniques in the Lingnan region, including wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, pottery sculpture, gray sculpture, copper iron casting, and color painting. It is known as the "pearl of Lingnan architectural art" and is the largest, most well preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall style building in China. Guangdong Folk Arts and Crafts Museum (Chen Clan Temple) is a famous cultural tourist attraction in Guangzhou. In 2002, it was rated as one of the "Eight Sights of the New Century Yangcheng". In 2008, it was rated as a national AAAA tourist attraction. Now, it is a patriotism education base in Guangzhou and a party member education base in Guangzhou.

In addition to protecting and managing the Chen Family Ancestral Hall, the Guangdong Folk Arts and Crafts Museum also actively assumes the responsibilities of a arts and crafts museum. Over the past 60 years since its establishment, with the selfless donations of a large number of patriotic figures, renowned scholars, and national masters of arts and crafts, including Yang Quan, Shang Chengzuo, Rong Geng, Xian Yuqing, Tan Chang, Li Zhifei, who are concerned about the construction of our museum's collection, as well as the efforts of several generations of art museum personnel, our museum has collected a total of over 20000 sets of various precious cultural relics and modern craftsmanship, including nearly 3000 sets of national level precious cultural relics, It is the most abundant art museum in the province that has collected high-quality folk crafts from Guangdong since the Ming and Qing dynasties. Our museum has a collection of dozens of different types, each with its own unique characteristics. They are carriers of various techniques such as Shiwan pottery, Guangcai porcelain, ivory carving, Cantonese embroidery, Guangzhou wood carving, brick carving, stone carving, etc., covering all craft categories listed in the national intangible cultural heritage list in Guangdong Province. In recent years, our museum has strengthened the collation and research of its collections and field research of various craft categories, improved the layout of the exhibition and improved the exhibition facilities, planned and held a number of thematic exhibitions, forums and educational activities, making Guangdong Folk Arts Museum a platform for contacting industrial masters and doing a good job of craft collation, research, exhibition and education.

In recent years, museums have innovatively introduced digital technology to monitor the safety, fire protection, and security of Chen Family Temple cultural relics and buildings; Building a digital experience hall and a constant temperature and humidity warehouse to make up for the shortcomings of exhibition space and warehouse conditions; Build a ticketing monitoring system, a third bathroom, and a tourist center; Fully utilize collection resources and audience resources to strengthen the commissioned development of cultural and creative products, continuously improve the quality of public services, and promote a high degree of integration between culture and tourism.
