At present, the Maritime Museum is the only "maritime" museum in Guangdong Province in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. It is located on the east side of the Nanhai Temple, a historical site of the Maritime Silk Road and a national key cultural relic protection unit. It covers a total area of 35738 square meters, with a construction area of 10000 square meters in the first phase. It is a professional organization that collects, displays and studies maritime (maritime silk) themed collections; Systematically collect and display the cultural relics and historical data of Maritime Silk Road and foreign trade development in Guangzhou over the past two thousand years, with the overall goal of showing Guangzhou's brilliant achievements in the history of the Maritime Silk Road and reappearing the historical style of the "millennium commercial capital"; It is an important measure for Guangzhou to implement the national "the Belt and Road" initiative and build the 21st century Maritime Silk Road.
The Nanhai Temple, located to the west of the adjacent museum, was first built in the 14th year of the Kaihuang reign of the Sui Dynasty (594 AD) and was a place for ancient emperors to worship the sea. It has a history of over 1420 years; Located at the mouth of Fuxu in ancient times, Huangmu Bay, and close to the mouth of the Pearl River, it is a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national 4A tourist scenic spot, and one of the historical sites of the world cultural heritage declared by the Maritime Silk Road in Guangzhou, playing an important role and historical witness in foreign trade and transportation.
