The Guwei Museum in Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong, has unveiled a new special exhibition titled 'The Wanli Shipwreck: Blue and White Porcelain in Global Trade', running from July 6, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
Bringing together more than 100 rare porcelain pieces, the exhibition traces the golden age of Chinese export ceramics from the late Ming dynasty to the mid-Qing period.
Highlights include a 17th-century 'Kraak' style plate depicting a Persian lady—made in Jingdezhen and purchased by Dutch traders during the Wanli reign.
Visitors will journey across time to explore the 16th to 19th centuries when blue and white porcelain became a global commodity.
Through 20 curated categories of export porcelain, the exhibition sheds light on how Chinese artistry adapted to Western tastes and aesthetics, creating a unique blend of design that shaped trade and cultural exchange.
The exhibition also reflects on the role of Hong Kong as a cultural crossroads, reinforcing the Guwei Museum’s commitment to historical education.
As the only private museum in Hong Kong’s Southern District, Guwei Museum has built a collection of nearly 1,000 artifacts spanning different civilizations and eras, and continues to offer educational programs for schools and the public alike.
For those interested in maritime trade, cross-cultural artistry, and the influence of Chinese porcelain on global markets, this exhibition offers a richly layered experience.
