Cathay Group has appointed Arnold Cheng as its Director for the Chinese Mainland, reinforcing its dedication to expanding its presence and strengthening connections across the region.

Cheng, a veteran of the Swire Group since 1992, will officially assume his new role on April 1, bringing with him extensive leadership experience across the aviation industry, both in the Chinese Mainland and internationally.

Before this appointment, Cheng was the Director of John Swire & Sons (China) Limited, overseeing business in the Greater Bay Area, and previously served as Director of Corporate Affairs at Cathay Pacific, making him well-positioned to drive the airline’s strategy in the market.

The creation of this role underscores Cathay’s confidence in the Chinese Mainland’s growth potential and its long-term vision to enhance connectivity between Hong Kong and global destinations.

Cathay has been steadily increasing its investments in the region, expanding flight routes, optimizing services, and actively recruiting local talent to strengthen its workforce.

Currently operating over 240 weekly flights to 19 destinations in 17 cities, including newly added routes to Ningbo, Beijing Daxing, and Sanya, Cathay is set to further scale up its operations in response to growing demand.

By the end of 2025, the airline aims to employ 4,000 staff from the Chinese Mainland, reinforcing its commitment to fostering local expertise in roles ranging from pilots and cabin crew to IT and customer service professionals.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Cheng highlighted the immense opportunities in the market, emphasizing Cathay’s unique position as a bridge between Hong Kong, China, and the world.

Alongside his new responsibilities, Cheng will continue his role at John Swire & Sons (China) Limited, further strengthening synergies between the group’s operations in the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
