In a blend of visionary collaboration, Poly Culture Group Corporation Limited (Poly Culture) and MGM are set to debut the Poly MGM Museum, Macau’s latest world-class cultural tourism landmark. This groundbreaking venue is slated for its official opening in November 2024 at MGM MACAU, marking the introduction of the first museum of international standing within an integrated resort across the Greater China region. Equipped with state-of-the-art, innovative technology, the museum is designed to foster novel exhibition experience for its audiences. For its inaugural exhibition, the museum collaborates with close to 20 national museums and premier cultural institutions, showcasing an exquisite array of top-grade national treasures alongside modern and contemporary works by Chinese and international artists.
Nestled on the second floor of MGM MACAU, the Poly MGM Museum spans almost 2,000 square meters. It has been constructed in accordance with Chinese national standards for the exhibition of first-class cultural relics, with highly precise environment regulation technology on par with global standards for institutions of such capacity.
The museum showcases traditional Chinese intangible heritage crafts through the language of modern architecture. A pivotal attraction is the Intangible Cultural Heritage Craft Column that pays homage to quintessential Chinese palatial architecture such as dougong and ornate cloisonné enamel, alongside art and cultural elements from the main countries along the “Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road”. Together, they present a vibrant scenographic interior that brings traditional craftsmanship’s rich cultural and historical value to the fore.
The museum innovates with features such as caisson ceilings, movable LED screens and flexible display panels to create a dynamic and versatile exhibition space. Cutting-edge technologies, including Poly’s proprietary OLED screens for interactive displays and directional audio systems, introduce a realm of possibilities for diverse exhibitions, offering visitors a multi-sensory immersive experience.
In its design essence, the Museum is a seamless embodiment of “East meets West”, “Antiquity and Modernity”, “Virtuality and Reality”, and “Culture and Technology”. It harnesses innovative forces to breathe fresh life into the junction of history and the contemporary, enriching the narrative of heritage treasures and unveiling a harmonious mosaic that blends the rich tapestries of Eastern and Western cultural synergy.
The Poly MGM Museum is steered by a top-tier professional team, including local Macao professionals, who actively contribute to the talent development of the local art and culture industries and lay the foundation for the city to serve as a cultural tourism destination.
Wang Bo, Chairman of Poly Culture, said, “The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China underscored the imperative of transforming China into a stronghold of vibrant socialist culture, setting a definitive course for the flourishing of cultural enterprises and industries. As the cultural development operational entity of Poly Group, Poly Culture actively embodies the national strategic vision and proactively executes its responsibilities as a state-owned enterprise. The Poly MGM Museum is a manifestation of our commitment to this vision, serving not just as a venue to champion premier Chinese culture and display the splendor of intangible cultural heritage but also as a confluence for cultural and artistic exchange, fostering dialogue and mutual enrichment between civilizations. This is particularly inspiring given its location in Macau—a historic critical juncture on the Maritime Silk Road and within the Greater Bay Area, a forefront of China’s connection to the world. President Xi has emphasized that the evolution of civilizations and the betterment of humanity is inseparable from tolerance, coexistence, exchanges and reciprocal learning. Looking ahead, the Poly MGM Museum aspires to be an important connector among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, enhancing our historical heritage and penning a new chapter in the narrative of Chinese civilization.”
Pansy Ho, Chairperson and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said, “Amidst Macau’s drive towards economic diversification, the city embraces its strategic role as ‘One Base’, capitalizing on the significant opportunities presented by the Nation’s development initiatives, such as the Belt and Road, the Greater Bay Area, and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Our Poly MGM Museum leverages Macau’s vital role as a crucial juncture on the Maritime Silk Road, acting as a gateway for international exchange and a crucible for the melding of Chinese and Western cultures. It captures the city’s distinctive urban essence, linking history with today, thus fueling a multifaceted local economic expansion. Bound by our collective enthusiasm for the Nation and our cultural heritage, Poly Culture, with its vast repository of artistic resources, and MGM, with our integrated resort capabilities, inject new life into the storied legacy of Chinese culture using cutting-edge technology. We employ the universal language of art to broadcast the splendor of our culture and to convey good Chinese narratives on the international stage. This endeavor also honors the momentous 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s reunification with the Motherland. Featuring world-class artistic expression, the Poly MGM Museum serves as a conduit linking the heartbeat of global cultures via Macau.”
The rich tapestry of traditional Chinese culture is a cradle for burgeoning creative forces. Like a vessel laden with invaluable cultural gems, propelled by culture and steered by artistry, the Poly MGM Museum is set to sail through the vigorous tides of global interchange, fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue, elevating the profile of Chinese culture on the world stage, advocating innovation, and ensuring that the profound narratives of China resonate deeper and more meaningfully across the globe.
