The mother of Chinese-born pop star Wanting Qu has been arrested in the family's hometown of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, outing her daughter (to the surprise of few) as a guanerdai - the privileged offspring of senior Chinese officials. Charges of corruption have been levied at Qu over the sale of state assets.

Wanting, 31, achieved stardom two years ago with her hit "You Exist in My Song," which she performed on the 2013 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In the same year, she became the first ever tourism ambassador for Vancouver, where the platinum-selling singer has been based since relocating to Canada for school aged 16.

Last year, she and Vancouver mayor Gregor 'The Mountain' Robertson hit the headlines by revealing that they were dating while Robertson was still technically married to his first wife.
