Chinese investor with (literally) more money than sense pays $8,888,888 for Melbourne building

AUD8,888,888 sure sounds lucky, if you're the type. But that's RMB43,045,039 - that has a couple of 4's in it, bad luck for sure. That said, it's USD6,924,088 - with 6's, 9's and a couple of 8's - a pretty auspicious sign. Also, it's a hell of a lot of money, but that seems to be beside the point.

A particularly superstitious Chinese investor threw down the sum above for a three-story office building in Melbourne, Australia. The bidding started at just AUD5 million, and the property's market value was estimated at AUD6.2 million, but this investor was damn determined to get his maximum luck - even if meant a really bad deal.

His closing bid, which looks like someone butt-dialed the auction agent, was "a staggering price rarely seen in Melbourne's real estate market." Not necessarily the sign of a wise investment.

In addition to highlighting eager spending of this particular investor, this case reveals one more thing about the Australian real estate market. The "three story office tower" was the description used by China's Xinhua, while the Australian News.com.au believes that the only real story here is that there's a pub in it.

To each his own.
