After stealing across the Yalu River from North P'yong'an toward Dandong on March 17, the two deserters were discovered by Chinese police. During the arrest, one of the men is said to have drawn a weapon and taken a bystander hostage on a rooftop.
The second soldier, however, managed to escape at this time and remains on the loose. Area police continue to search for him and his image now adorns "Wanted" posters around the border region:
In late December last year, another army deserter from the DPRK went on a killing spree in a Chinese border town, killing four elderly residents as he searched for food and money. Another incident was later revealed in which a family of three in the ethnic Korean community abutting the border was murdered by another North Korea soldier fleeing his homeland.
Ugly reports of these soldiers terrorizing their Chinese neighbors has been met with reports of abject desperation across the border in North Korea, where poverty and starvation are compelling soldiers to flee and commit violent acts just to find food.
