At some point we should just rebrand from That's Online to That's Chinese Tourists Behaving Badly. In Thailand, authorities are upset and have placed new signs at many public restrooms after receiving complaints about Chinese tourists using the sinks as their own personal foot baths. After last week's mainland baby filling a Hong Kong flight's sink with diarrhea this seems a bit pedestrian, but local Thais are upset nonetheless.
According to the South China Morning Post, this issue has particular resonance in Thailand where "[local] residents regard the behavior as a 'cultural sin' because in their tradition feet should only be washed in a separate basin to other parts of the body." The photo above comes from local Thai media, bemoaning this plague that has struck their nation.
While that makes sense, we'd say that seeing a tourist hoist their dirty feet onto the counter and into the sink is universally gross - not necessarily some idiosyncratic Thai belief. New anti-foot-washing signs have been put up on the islands of Phi Phi, an area popular with Chinese tourists.
This news comes just a few weeks after one Thai temple got in hot water after allegedly making Chinese tourists use a different bathroom than other foreigners. Maybe they saw their feet?
