Three Chinese women in transit at Okinawa's Naha Airport caused what have been described as "chaotic" scenes after they breached airport security to go shopping.
The passengers, en route to Tokyo from Ishigaki Island, somehow slipped through the customs hall to leave the gates in search of more shops in the airport departures hall.
When they made their way back to their gate, security detained the women for questioning; even though they soon realized the suspects were just a gaggle of clueless dama hunting for duty-free tat, they couldn't rule out the possibility that the women might have passed on an illegal item to another passenger.
As a result, every single passenger waiting for their flights in the terminal were forced to go their customs and security check once again. Five flights were canceled due to the incident and 23 take-offs were pushed back for hours. In all, 6,300 passengers were effected.

Some netizens have deflected blame for the fiasco onto Naha Airport, arguing that it was their own fault for having lax security measures. Others, however, have shot back that the airport had evidently run well for decades and the fact that it had been turned upside-down by unscrupulous mainland travelers only reflected poorly on themselves.
