"The crops are really coming in this year," says one farmer.
"Yeah, they sure are," says another.
"You know what, we should get a few dozen people together and then get some bulls and have everybody watch while we make the bulls fight each other. For the harvest," adds a third.
"Who the hell are you??" should have been the response from the first two members of our imaginary conversation, but instead, they seem to have said, "Rock on." And so the Rong'an county bull fight came to pass.
According to the People's Daily, who apparently have no problem with this, the festival was held "to celebrate the harvest and pray for the fortune and prosperity of the next year."
People in Guangxi have been bull fighting for years (well, the people haven't; at least the Spaniards step into the ring) and it's enough of a big deal that the city of Liuzhou even features it on its official tourism page. We have a slogan suggestion: Do you like dog fighting? We've got something even better in Liuzhou!
We're not one to hope for the worst, but maybe if 2015 turns out to be a poor harvest, unfortunate and unprosperous year, people will realize that making bulls fight each other isn't going to fix anything.
