Professor Peter Piot, one of the scientists who first discovered the Ebola virus, has warned that China is deeply under threat of an Ebola outbreak due to the huge numbers of Chinese workers in Africa, where countries in the west of the continent are experiencing the worst Ebola outbreak in history.

Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, made the grim prediction at a symposium in Hong Kong. He also warned that many healthcare facilities across the country were not always "up to standard," putting public health at grave risk.

Thus far, 10,141 suspected cases of the deadly virus have been reported worldwide, and the death toll stands at 4,922. Piot estimates that the epidemic will last another six-12 months with a doubling of infections every 30 days, claiming thousands more lives.
