Apple fans across China have been munching on sour grapes today as they learned that the country will not, after all, be included in the much-awaited iPhone 6's initial release on 19 September. Instead, they'll have to wait a whole week longer.
iPhone 6 launch info before alteration...
... and after
On Apple's official website, China was originally listed as one of the lucky recipients of the device's earliest launch, an honor it shared with Australia, Singapore, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States. Just before the launch event, however, China was struck off the list.
This has prompted patriots across the land to condemn Apple as "ungrateful" and "traitors" who had "insulted" the country, and to call on proud citizens to boycott the company's products and only buy domestic brands instead.
For some, the fact that Hong Kong was included but not Chinese mainland just added further insult to injury:
Hong Kong is China's!
It's because of Apple writing like this that so many foreigners think Hong Kong is a country
How come I only just found out that Hong Kong is a country?
Other commentators passed on the haterade and explained that writing "Hong Kong" instead of the politically correct (in mainland PRC) "Hong Kong, China" does not mean that Apple conspires to tear apart the motherland.
But of course it's the internet so no one paid much attention to them.
