Four people have been stabbed to death and five more injured after a school stabbing yesterday morning in Shiyan, Hubei. One of the fatalities was a teacher and three were schoolchildren. After killing his victims, the assailant leaped to his death from the school's rooftop.

The attack occurred on the first day of classes at Yunxi county's Dongfang Primary School. The father of a fifth-grade student who had been asked to transfer due to poor grades came to the school to plead with authorities to let his daughter stay, since he hadn't found another school to take her in.

When his pleas fell on deaf ears, the man, surnamed Chen, went on a rampage, stabbing one teacher and 8 schoolchildren. Homeroom teacher Liu reportedly struggled with Chen in an attempt to give the children time to escape, but was stabbed in the lungs. Chen then slashed at the students as they attempted to flee.

Chen has been described as a quiet man who rarely interacted with others. Having dropped out of middle school and taken up agricultural work, the family's economic situation was generally poor - a problem exacerbated by a recent injury sustained by Chen in a car accident to his right hand. Fellow villagers unanimously expressed great shock towards news of his actions.
