At 4:25pm on Saturday in Nyemo County, Tibet, a bus carrying 50 people, mostly tourists from several eastern regions of China, plummeted into a deep valley after colliding with an SUV and a pickup truck. 44 people died in the collision and 11 were injured, including passengers of both the tour bus as well as those in the other two vehicles. Details of the deceased have not been released.

The bus fell over ten meters and landed on its roof. According to the report, it is likely that the three vehicles were driving over the speed limit when the accident occurred.

Emergency personnel and rescue workers took the injured to be treated at hospitals in Lhasa, located west of the crash site.

Police have detained the managers of the tour company involved with the bus and are holding them responsible for the crash. In an attempt to avoid similar fatal accidents from occurring, the regional government has held an emergency meeting to reassess road and travel safety in the region.
