It's only been a few short weeks since the last scumbag expat scandal, but here we go again!
A video spreading like wildfire across Taiwan today captures for the ages yet another step backward for the image of foreigners in the region.
On a bus in Taoyuan, a passenger who misses his own stop because he didn't ring the bell until after they'd already passed it goes bat-shit berserk on the bus driver, throwing around four-letters words and eventually his fists, too.
Elderly passengers on board try to mediate between the two, apologize repeatedly and remind him that "Taiwan is a country with laws," but he's having none of it.
Netizens have, unsurprisingly, been baying for blood — and by blood of course we mean legal recourse (this is Taiwan after all).
Besides making the obvious observations regarding the man's not insignificant assholery, they've been opining that his mute local girlfriend is the most "face-losing" aspect of the scene. Despite the good intentions of the would-be mediators, they've also said it's absurd and embarrassing that anyone should be apologizing to this lowlife when he's so clearly in the wrong.
While their identities haven't been confirmed, the meathead is rumored to be an ABC (American-born Chinese) named Jason. If nothing else, at least it goes to show that laowai douchebagery and having a "foreign" face share no direct correlation.
Although some of the nation's angrier web users might feel justice has not been done, however, the driver himself has said that he will not be pursuing any legal action against his assailant. Chen Jinji told reporters today that the man didn't directly hit him and he couldn't understand his English abuses anyway, so such a "trifling matter" isn't worth making a case about.
