A Chinese fan has reportedly died after after staying up for too many nights in a row to watch the World Cup. The 25-year-old man was found in his home in Suzhou just hours after the Netherlands 5-1 mauling of Spain on Friday.
According to neighbors, family members saw him lying motionless in his room around 7am and went to check on him. They discovered that he was no longer breathing and immediately called for medical help, but he could not be revived.
“At the time, it happened to be the group stage when Chile faced off against Australia.” the neighbors said, adding that he still had his computer on, and the probability of him having been watching the World Cup is relatively high.
Brazil is 11 hours behind China, meaning fans in the Middle Kingdom have to stay up all through the night to follow the tournament. With the Netherlands-Spain game kicking off at 4pm in Brazil, it did not finish in China until around 5am, and doctors believe his death could have been caused by sleep deprivation.
