Japanese police have arrested a man who attacked two members of popular Japanese band AKB48 with a saw.

The 24-year-old man identified as Satoru Umeta slashed 19-year-old Rina Kawaei and 18-year-old Anna Iriyama during the band's visit to Takizawa yesterday.

According to Kyodo News, the two girls sustained injuries to their hands and heads while a male staff member was cut on the hand.

AKB48's manager was reported as saying the singers were taken to hospital where they underwent surgery, and were able to return home on Monday.

The band, who have around 140 members and are classified as the world's largest pop group, have cancelled their Tokyo concert and other fan events.

Update: Both singers were released from hospital early Tuesday, while the attacker, 24-year-old Satoru Umeta, reportedly admitted to the charge of attempted murder after being arrested.
