Local police have said there was only one assailant in yesterday's stabbing at Guangzhou's train station square which injured 6, according to ECNS.

The as yet unidentified male suspect was found by police carrying a long fruit knife. The assailant is being treated in hospital after being shot at by authorities. According to reports, the man turned on police after they fired warning shots.

"After verbal warnings were ineffective, police fired, hitting one male suspect holding a knife and subdued him," the police posted in an online statement.

Other media reports had said up to four attackers were responsible for the knifings.

The stabbings took place at around 11:30 am yesterday morning at one of the three busiest stations on the Chinese mainland. The wounded were sent to the General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command for treatment, with three undergoing immediate surgery for their injuries. According to police late last night, the 6 injured individuals are all out of danger.

Sun Bao, an eyewitness, said he saw a man in his 20s bleeding copiously on the ground after his head was stabbed. "The wound (on the man's head) was more than 15 cm in length. The injured man spoke a Henan dialect," he said, adding that two women and two other men were lying wounded about 10 meters away.

Ni Zhiquan, another witness, said a middle-aged foreigner was also injured. "I saw the white man, who had grey hair, cover his right arm, which was bleeding, and run away," he said. Authorities have not confirmed whether a Westerner was amongst those injured in the knifing.

The attack follows string of high profile assaults on the country's railway stations. On April 30, a bombing at a railway station in Urumqi  injured 79 and killed 3. On March 1, a group of knife wielding assailants attacked Kunming railway station killing 29 and injuring 143. Both attacks were blamed on religious extremists.

A spokeswoman from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying, said the Chinese government will implement measures to protect both individuals and their properties, as well as maintain social stability.

"No matter what their purposes are, those who use violence to harm the innocent will be punished," she said.
