A Chinese tourist was trampled to death by an elephant at an Botswanan game reserve over the weekend, after leaving his tour vehicle to take photos of the creature.
Local police chief Ismael Morebodi said that the man was attacked by a herd of the animals after taking photos of the group on Sunday. According to Morebodi, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Four other individuals travelling with the man were unharmed.
Botswana has one of the largest elephant population in Africa, most living within game reserves and national parks. Up to 50,000 of the animals visit the Chobe River region in the dry season when other water sources in the hinterland have dried up.
Local media frequently reports incidents between man and the animals. Morebodi urges tourists to take caution when visiting game reserves, and to follow the advice of tour guides.
