Hong Kong police shot dead a 21 year old local man in the early hours of Monday morning after he attempted to attack his wife with a knife, Xinhua reports.

According to senior superintendent Eugene Yue, the unnamed man took a security guard hostage at the residential building in Lam Tin where he lives.

When the man then attempted to attack his wife, two officers warned him before deciding the only possible action was to shoot him after he ignored their caution. They fired three shots at the man, who was then pronounced dead at the scene.

Yue explained that there are strict rules on Hong Kong police using firearms, adding that surveillance footage from the building was being retrieved by officers to aid their investigation.
