A couple from Huizhou, Guangdong Province, have been hospitalised after the man strapped a gas canister to the back of his pregnant girlfriend and ignited it- but miraculously the baby survived.
36 year old Li Moulian dragged his girlfriend Xu Fan, 21, out of their bed in the middle of the night and forced her into backseat of their car before setting fire to the canister.
Xu became pregnant following a one night stand with Li, and the couple decided to stay together, setting up home in Mazhuang New Village. Six months into their relationship, Li awoke Xu and told her he was going to kill her, accusing her of wanting to murder his family. Police were alerted to the attack when anxious neighbours rang the station after seeing the man drag his girlfriend across the street, and were able to stop the car after spotting it driving around town.
Police first rescued Xu and extinguished the fire before rescuing Li, who suffered more severe burns than his girlfriend. Both are now being treated in a local hospital, though Li is not expected to pull through. Amazingly, Xu's unborn baby survived the attack.
Tao Hou, a police spokesperson, said: "As the police car with a siren approached the car with the man and woman inside, and another blocked off its escape route from the rear, the man ignited something in the car which exploded into flames."
Xu said there had been no previous signs of mental instability, and had been shocked when Li began accusing her of attempting to kill his family.
